The Nigeria Football Federationn has expressed shock and sadness at the death of ex –Nigeria U_23 team player Endurance Idahor in Sudan.




The former national team star was playing in a Sudanese top division league match for his Al –Merreikh Omdurman against Al Amal when he suddenly collapsed in the 13th minute after obviously being hit by an elbow and colliding with a team –mate.



NFF General Secretary, Dr. Bolaji Ojo_Oba said: “This is a very rude shock to all of us at the Football Federation. What actually happened? How did it happen?” Ojo_Oba was asking throughout Sunday. Later, he would say: “We’re making serious efforts to get all the details. This is an unfortunate development”



Idahor, an attacking midfielder was a member of the national U_20 and U_23 teams at different periods but never made the cut to major championships. He was however doing very well in the Sudanese Premier League before his untimely death on Saturday night.

The former Dolphin FC of Port Harcourt ace becomes the latest in the unsavoury tale of Nigerian footballers who had died in action at home and abroad.

Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji died on the turf of the National Stadium, Lagos on August 12, 1989, 13 minutes to the end of a 1990 World Cup qualifying match against Angola, and Amir Angwe died during an African Cup Winners Cup match involving Julius Berger FC and Maxaquine of Mozambique at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos in October 1995.

Ex – Eaglet John Okwara died in a training session with a club in the Middle East earlier in the decade, and former Eagles’ goalie Sam Okoye and defender Charles Nduka were brought home dead from Iran and South Africa respectively.
