Bandar Seri Begawan - A Thai man got more out of a holiday in Brunei than most people would; he decided to convert to Islam on Sunday night. Bangkok-based Soothi Mingmant, more than 60 years old, now known as Salahuddin Abdullah Mingmant arrived in Brunei two weeks ago for the first time on a holiday and for a business trip.During an interview, The Brunei Times learnt that Salahuddinhad been in Brunei for only two weeks when he decided to embrace Islam.Salahuddin related that he decided to convert after he had seen the way Muslims in Brunei conducted their lives.
"They've been very nice to me and made me feel good. I see the people going to the mosque all the time and it has moved me so much that I decided to convert," he said. He added that he was very impressed with the cleanliness of the mosque grounds that he visited. He said that prior to becoming a Muslim he kept having dreams of converting. Asked what he knew about Islam, he said, "Just the basics, what everyone else knows."
Salahuddin will be in Brunei for another two to three weeks during which he will be completing his course with the Islamic Da'wah Centre. Salahuddin recited the syahadah declaring his iman (faith) in the Oneness of Allah (SWT) and the seal of the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the presence of a religious officer from Islamic Da'wah Centre and two witnesses.
The ceremony concluded with the Dzikir Marhaban while the new convert was sprinkled with bunga rampai by friends. The ceremony was conducted at the home of Hj Abd Thani Mohammad in Kampung Perpindahan Bunut.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
